High Court of Bombay

Hon'ble Shri Justice Advait M. Sethna is appointed as an Additional Judge at the Bombay High Court on 25 October 2024.

Born on October 11, 1976, in Mumbai, Justice Sethna completed his B.Com from Jai Hind College and earned his LL.B. (First Class) from Government Law College, Mumbai, ranking 2nd at Mumbai University and 1st at his college. He further pursued an LL.M. with High Honors in International Comparative Law from Chicago Kent College of Law, USA, and another LL.M. from Mumbai University. He has also been awarded a Fellowship by the Salzburg Global Seminar and holds certifications in Law Teaching and Legal Research Skills from Cardiff Law School, UK.

Hailing from a distinguished legal family; his late father, Shri Mahendra I. Sethna, was a Senior Advocate with over 55 years of practice at the Bombay High Court. Justice Sethna also enrolled as an Advocate on August 4, 2000, and practiced primarily at the Bombay High Court, specializing in Constitutional Law, Intellectual Property Rights, Arbitration, and Commercial matters. He has appeared before the Supreme Court of India, various High Courts, and tribunals, handling significant cases involving constitutional issues, taxation, and criminal law.

As Special Public Prosecutor, he represented the CBIC, DRI, Income Tax, and NCB, and was counsel in cases of national significance. His notable representations include defending the Union of India in a case under the Enemy Property Act concerning the house of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, challenging the constitutional validity of provisions in the Pre-Natal Diagnostics Act, and appearing for the CBFC in film certification matters. Justice Sethna has also served as an arbitrator, mediator, and amicus curiae in cases concerning prisoners' rights during COVID-19.

Justice Sethna has been a part-time professor at Government Law College, Mumbai, and a visiting faculty member at NMIMS. He has judged national and international moot court competitions and contributed to reputed legal publications, a law journals/ reports.

After more than 2 decades of practicing at the Bar, appointed as a Judge he has authored significant orders/judgments in writ petitions, appeals under the Income Tax Act, Commercial Courts Act, Land Acquisition matters, Passport Act, Arbitration and Conciliation Act, Administrative laws, among others.

Personally, Justice Sethna is passionate about Yoga, Astrology, Philosophy, and Travelling.
